Visit Arkansas

Arkansas is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. It has an area of 77,971 square miles (198,842 km2) and a population of 2,964,744 people as of 2018. The capital city is Little Rock.

The name “Arkansas” comes from the Choctaw word arkansa, meaning “land of flowing water”. The first Europeans to arrive were French explorers Jacques Le Moyne de Sainte-Marie and Pierre Laclède, who came ashore at what they called La Pointe du Miroir (“Mirror Point”) near modern-day Fayetteville in 1673. They named the river they found there le Rivière aux Boeufs (“River with Cattle”). In 1719, Jean Baptiste Biencourt de Poutrincourt explored the Arkansas River valley and gave it its current name.

The territory that would become the U.S. state of Arkansas was acquired by France in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. After the Louisiana Purchase, the United States Congress passed the Missouri Compromise Act of 1820, which admitted Maine to annex most of the present-day states of Missouri and Iowa, including the land that would later be known as Arkansas. On March 3, 1819, the Arkansas Territory was created, which included the lands that had been ceded by Spain. When the Mexican–American War began in 1846, Mexico no longer claimed any territory north of the Rio Grande, so the United States gained control over Texas to the United States by Spain after the Louisiana Purchase.
